The Monaro Stages Rally: A Story of Passion and Resilience

Writer: Kim WinksKim Winks

In 2017, Dave Ballard envisioned a new rally in the Snowy Monaro region and enlisted the help of Debbie Quirk and Kim Winks. Their initial discussions sparked the creation of the "Monaro Stages Rally," a project that required navigating shire roads, securing council approvals, and collaborating with local police. This formidable trio, with Dave and Kim scouting suitable routes and Debbie managing the crucial paperwork and permits, successfully launched the inaugural event in 2017 to widespread acclaim.

The rally quickly gained momentum. Local business Kosciuszko Automotive, led by Andrew and Georgina Penny, stepped up as the naming rights sponsor after the successful maiden event. This partnership, along with support from local suppliers like Wildbrumby Schnapps, Jindabyne Brewing, Bombala Lions, South East Printing, and Skymesh, further fueled the event's growth. The Monaro Stages Rally earned a place on the NSW State Event calendar from 2018 to 2020, even achieving the prestigious title of 2018 Motorsports Australia NSW State Event of the Year.

The challenges of the 2021 pandemic forced the rally to adapt. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, the event shifted entirely to the forest, specifically the Bondi Forest near Bombala. This move resulted in the longest event on the calendar, utilizing brand new roads impacted by the devastating 2020 bushfires. Despite the difficulties, the Monaro team's dedication shone through. They were even approached to host the final round of the Australian Rally Championship (ARC), a testament to their hard work. Unfortunately, inclement weather led to the cancellation of the ARC component, but the club event proceeded a week later, thanks to the team's unwavering efforts.

In 2022, the event capitalized on the Bondi Forest roads and the support of the local Lions Club, showcasing the forest's potential. However, tragedy struck in 2023 when Debbie Quirk was diagnosed with cancer. The rally became a fundraising effort for the Cancer Care Foundation in Wagga Wagga, where Debbie was receiving treatment. Sadly, Debbie passed away before the event, but the team, with heavy hearts, carried on in her memory, raising over $10,000 for the foundation.

Following Debbie's passing, Dave and Kim took 2024 to regroup and refocus. With the support of their car club, they rediscovered their passion and are thrilled to announce the return of the Monaro Stages Rally in 2025. This time, the two-day event will be held on the October long weekend under the banner of the Australian Auto-Sport Alliance (AASA) and the Australian Motor Sport Action Group (AMSAG). The Monaro Stages Rally stands as a testament to the power of community, resilience, and the enduring spirit of its founders.
