Officiating at a Motorsport event is a rewarding way to contribute to the sport you love while gaining a deeper understanding of how events are run. Whether you're interested in officiating at Khanacross, Rallysprints, or Rally events, the process is straightforward, free and involves a few key steps.
This guide will walk you through the process of becoming an official for motorsport events, with a focus on these three popular event types.

Step 1: Understand the Role of a Motorsport Official
Depending on the type of event you want to officiate at, there are specific roles you can apply for. Below are some examples of the roles you may be interested in for Khanacross, Rallysprints, and Rally events:
Stage Commander: Oversee a particular stage of the event, ensuring it runs smoothly and safely.
Control Officials: Manage the event from the start to finish, ensuring all participants comply with event regulations.
Stage Officials: Assisting specific rally stages, ensuring they are safe and properly set up.
Marshals: Manage spectator areas, assist with safety, and clear incidents on the stage.
Road Closures: Your own private spectator spot! Grab some friends, pack a lunch and ensure that no one who shouldn't enters the course.
Timing Officials: Record competitors' times on each stage and ensure accuracy in the results.
Safety Officers: Oversee safety protocols to ensure competitors are following event guidelines.
BBQ: Help out the club, competitors and volunteers by assisting to run the BBQ for the event.

Step 2: Apply to Officiate at an Event
Once you’ve completed the required training and gained your official certification, it’s time to apply to officiate at an event. Here's how:
Find Local Events
Visit Light Car Club of Canberra's Event Calendar to find upcoming events in your area. You can also register your interest to hear about events needing help here.
Sign Up as an Official
Contact the event or the club directly to sign up as an official, providing examples of any prior experience, who you might like to officiate with (Road closures are a great way to see the action with your families own private viewing spot) and areas of interest.
Confirm Your Availability
Once your application is accepted, confirm your availability with the event organisers. Depending on the role, you may need to attend a briefing or an additional training session before the event.
